My friend Aloysius (the sole surviving reader of this blog), suddenly messaged me on Thursday night:
“Singapore football massacre!”
I was in the middle of a TTRPG game, and quickly opened my Flashscore app to search for the latest football match results that day. I found the live scoreline for Singapore vs South Korea: we were losing by 0-7 in the 80th minute.
My immediate reaction? I smiled and chuckled to myself. The score could have been 0-10 to the South Koreans, and I still would not have batted an eyelid. Our national team losing by such a huge scoreline is no longer an anomaly — it is to be expected.
I won’t retread the same old rhetoric about how the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is helmed by useless leaders who have no concrete plan and no passion towards improving our sport. Other local football writers like Neil Humphreys have already stated the cold, hard facts — it’s an unspoken truth that every Singaporean football fan knows.
Aloysius was more furious at the toxic positivity and blind optimism of some of the responses on the FAS Facebook page:
- “We showed improvement.”
- “We played well in the first half.”
When reality is too harsh, we sometimes conjure up excuses and delusions as a coping mechanism. Continue to dream on, because I’d rather stay wide awake and move on with my life. Singapore will never ever qualify for the World Cup, not in this lifetime or ten lifetimes.
Just look at our FIFA world rankings for 2024. We have been languishing in the 150-160 ranking spot for the last ten years with no visible improvement. It took Iceland just 10+ years to eventually qualify for the World Cup after committing to a nationwide plan.

Move on and face the facts. Dream over.
WAKE UP SINGAPORE FOOTBALL! YOU ARE GOING THE WAY OF WCW!
