I’ve wanted to write about my experience with the Resident Evil series for a long time, but just couldn’t find the right words to describe the feelings in my head.
Rich Stanton’s piece for Eurogamer is spot on. Although he only talks about the first game, he understands what RE1 was trying to accomplish: Instilling horror and surprise into the player through clever game design and (intentionally cumbersome) mechanics.
My favourite game in the series (before RE4 rewrote everything) is still Resident Evil 2 because it improved on RE1‘s foundations, and was near-perfect in its pacing, design, and the switching of its two protagonists. Happy 20th birthday, Resident Evil.
