I was playing PvP in one of Destiny’s multiplayer maps earlier using the Titan class. Titans have a super ability called Ward of Dawn which summons a protective bubble that bestows both yourself and any allies inside a substantial buff to either weapon damage or defence. It’s a highly versatile ability, one of my favourites in the game, because there are so many dynamic ways to deploy it. You can use it defensively near your teammates to help them hold an objective, or offensively to block off an important choke point (with the right item, Titans can spec their bubble to cause bad things to happen to enemies that step through it).
What amazes me is the amount of enemy players that just charge blindly into the bubble once they see me cast it. Think about it carefully. There are so many disadvantages in doing so:
- I can see you from within the safety of my bubble. I have the advantage in terms of reaction because I will be ready to start firing once you enter.
- I have an offensive buff to my weapon attack or a defensive shield. That further reduces your chances of winning a gunfight against me 1-on-1 inside the bubble.
- Can’t you just run away, wait for my bubble (and my buffs) to disappear, then fight me again on even terms later?
The last point is the most important, because a lot of players seem to lack that tactical judgment or creative sense when playing an FPS. They just charge blindly to the biggest hotspot, pull their trigger when they see an enemy, get killed, respawn, and repeat the process over and over. You need to assess the situation (can I really win this battle), analyse your environment (will this spot leave me open? Is there a place to retreat?), and continue to think while you are shooting.
The reason why I am blogging this down now is because Blizzard’s Overwatch is coming next year, and with its release a new floodgate of FPS newbies will be thrown into the fray. Already, a couple of my friends who managed to get into the Overwatch beta were lamenting at how “noob” so many of their pub opponents are. Sounds exactly like the players I’m encountering in Destiny PvP.
It’s great that FPSes are making a resurgence again, although in a slightly different MOBA-hybrid form like Overwatch or Battleborn. Remember, beginners. Your brains are just as important as your reflexes. Use it.
