Was reading Kilvear’s blog post on fighting games and it struck a chord in me. In the last several months, I have felt very reluctant to play FGs, be it Melty or UNIEL. Mainly because of the huge time commitment needed to reach the level that I aspire to achieve with my characters.
Long gone are the days of spending hours at the arcade, hours in training mode trying to learn a new character. The other day I loaded up training mode for UNIEL, determined to learn a backup character to Eltnum… and I just immediately exited the menu and closed the game. I did not have the endurance nor patience.
I still like the genre but I am no longer the Edward five years ago who so boldly told himself to “master Melty Blood to the best of my ability”. A full-time job requiring me to work shifts, plus trying to study for JLPT has forced me to rethink how to manage my time. And at this moment spending hours learning FGs just isn’t a good way to use up whatever free hours I have.
Maybe Street Fighter V or some other game will reignite this interest. But until then, I’m putting my personal FG journey on hold.
