The best analysis of why World of Warcraft has remained the undisputed king of MMOs for the past 10 years.
Casual gamers can just consume the singleplayer quests at their own leisure. Hardcore players can join a guild and try to defeat raid bosses: the ultimate test of skill, knowledge, and teamwork. There is always something interesting to do in the game, and there is always something for everyone.
But for me, the true hallmark of a videogame’s quality is the effort put into telling a story. There have been some mis-steps with WoW’s lore in the past few years, but I greatly enjoyed taking the time to complete the quests in each zone, and finding out more about the story and characters in that particular area. And every time I play a different MMO, I get frustrated and eventually go back to WoW.
WoW has perfected the genre, but ironically, has also killed it. Because nothing else will ever come close to replicating its success.
