Warlords of Draenor has a great opening cinematic that references the pivotal moment in Warcraft history where Grommash Hellscream faces off against Mannoroth (but this time, Grom survives). However, Wrath of the Lich King still has the best WoW cinematic in my opinion, and it is probably the best trailer in all of Blizzard’s history.
The choir in the background is unforgettable, and has become synonymous with representing Arthas and his bloodline as a Menethil. Everything that his father King Terenas II is saying in the voiceover, is actually a haunting irony as Arthas has completely abandoned every principle from his former duties as future king and paladin.
The saga started in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is brought to an end as Arthas is finally slain by adventurers in WotLK’s final endgame raid. His death, as he dies in the spirit of his father’s arms, is a powerful and emotional videogame moment. I never get tired of watching this cinematic: it is compelling, poignant, and tragic all at the same time.
Even the holiest and mightiest of warriors are not infallible. And the victory in vanquishing a deadly foe like the Lich King came at a terrible cost, as both the Horde (Dranosh Saurfang) and Alliance (Bolvar Fordragon) suffered severe casualties.
