Under Night In-Birth has been out for PS3 for two weeks, and I have been doing my best to play it almost every day since then, neglecting my Melty Blood. Earlier today one of the Korean players in the #MeltyWay IRC chat invited me for a netplay game. I obliged because I hadn’t played a proper MB versus match for awhile, and I also wanted to test and see if playing too much UNIEL had screwed up my MB rhythm.
It did, slightly, but I was furiously livid at something else: the fucking stupid netcode. I used to get delay-3 matches to the Koreans, but I don’t know why this time it was delay-5. I had problems hit confirming, could not do any advanced combos outside of F-Sion’s most basic BnB, and I couldn’t throw break.
Ironic, because I used to be able to play delay-5 matches against the Japanese ages ago (if I was lucky to get such delay), but I’ve gotten way too used to UNIEL’s way better netcode. What a huge world of difference two numbers can make.
I was grateful to UNIEL for training me at throw breaking (throws are a very vital part of that game, and you need to subsequently learn how to defend yourself against it). Nine times out of ten, I saw my opponent’s throws coming. Each time I pressed the AD buttons… and nothing happened. This upsetted me very greatly. If my reaction inputs are not registering because of the netplay delay, then what is the damn point?
I am very deeply gutted, because after this session, I feel like distancing myself from MB even more. The fighting game I once loved with all my heart is starting to be a pain in the fucking ass. It’s time to make way for UNIEL.
