I’ve finally found the time to watch my Tiny Toon Adventures DVD collection, starting with Season 1: Volume 1. In the second short cartoon of the “Furrball Follies” episode, which stars Fifi Le Fume, Fifi actually calls Furrball a “jiggling gigolo”. I kid you not, and I have taken a screenshot of that scene with subtitles turned on as proof.
It’s no secret that the old Warner Bros. cartoons (especially Animaniacs) had a lot of subtle dirty jokes and innuendo. Most of them were cleverly masked through the smart use of puns and obscure references. In Fifi’s case however, it’s her strong French accent and vocabulary that tricks the audience. Most kids (myself included, when I first watched this episode as a six-year-old) won’t know what a “jiggling gigolo” is, and she says the phrase so quickly that many older viewers will probably attribute those seemingly unrecognisable words to some French jargon.
Subtitles never lie though, and I am very glad that WB made the effort to put in high quality subs into the DVDs. I am very sure that there are more cases of innuendo in other episodes, which is why I am labelling this post as “part 1”. I will post more as soon as I see them on the DVD.
In the meantime, here’s a great compilation video of the many adult jokes found in Animaniacs:
