So glad I made the effort to watch the 10.30am show of Evangelion 2.0 this morning at Cineleisure (because all the other timings for Tuesday and Wednesday were inconvenient). Unlike Eva 1.0, which only had minor changes from the TV series, Eva 2.0 goes on a completely different tangent and takes the story to a whole new level.
Quite interesting to see how Third Impact was brought about this time by Shinji’s ascension as an Eva pilot, as opposed to the breakdown of his ego in the original End of Evangelion movies. The Key of Nebuchadnezzar sounds like your typical holy-grail plot device. I have no idea what’s going to happen next, and I don’t even know if there’s going to be Shinji+Asuka anymore. But the old, “original” canon story has been done to death many times already. I’m quite receptive to the new direction that Rebuild is taking.
I’m still unsure about what Mari’s role in the overall plot will be, although I sense a certain foreshadowing of events to come (“activate BEAST MODE!”). The switching of Eva-03’s pilot from Touji to Asuka was ingenious. I felt that Touji’s role as an Eva pilot in the original TV series was a huge plot hole that came from nowhere, this change of pilots makes more sense. It’ll be interesting to see how Asuka’s character is developed from here onwards (no more Eva series showdown, no more mental mind-rape breakdown?).
Feeling tempted to grab the Blu-ray release of the movies. The animation is absolutely splendid to watch.
And Ryoji Kaji, your English is fail.
